      QLD Manta rays abound, Lady Elliot Island This tiny island on the southern Great Barrier Reef is one of Australia's best places to experience giant oceanic manta rays, which have a "wingspan" reaching 7m. The marshes are a vital nesting site for waterbirds in Australia; 77 species are found here, including the Australasian bittern, magpie goose and painted snipe. VIG Spider crabs congregate, Port Phillip From late May to mid-June thousands of giant spider crabs gather to to moult, shedding their protective exoskeletons in the waters of Melbourne.
