      National theatre is not simply a building. To say it is a company of actors is closer to the truth; but more accurately, it is a predominantly national repertory acted in a specifically national style. These theatres have their good and bad periods, but their continuity allows variations in quality to exist within the fixed demarcations of an accepted pattern. In Great Britain people have been desultorily trying to form a national theatre since 1948. It will take years of effort to build the national theatre to a position where it is worthy of its name. But, a decent start had been made. The national theatre is not restricted to British plays, and certainly not to Shakespearean or classical drama.
