    • Abstract:
The article looks at the role played by conquistador Hernando Cortez in Spain's conquest of the Americas. Cortez had an amazing knack for convincing people to believe in him and do whatever he wanted. He was also able to win the trust of Indians he met on the way to Tenochtitlan. In war and diplomacy, he had amazing timing. Soon after the grand entrance of Spanish soldiers into Tenochtitlan, events began that would lead to the Aztecs demise. The commander left in charge, Pedro de Alvarado, had ordered his men to attack the Mexica while they were enjoying a religious festival. Through the summer of 1520, the Spanish prepared to attack Tenochtitlan. Smallpox swept through Tenochtitlan, and for seventy days, men and women, young and old, from the palace to the huts of commoners, cried out in agony.
