Information on several blacks related to manufacturing is presented. James Forten Sr. established the first major black-owned sail making shop in Philadelphia. Thomas Day, a free black, was the first widely recognized black furniture and cabinet maker in the deep South. D. Watson Onley built the first steam saw and planning mill owned and operated entirely by blacks in Jacksonville, Florida.
