      This article discusses the relationship between seat belt use and risk tolerance in light of the 50th anniversary of the invention of the three-point seat belt for the motor vehicle. The history of the design of this safety device by the mechanical engineer Nils Bohlin for automobile manufacturer Volvo Car Corp. is described. The relationship between the seat belt and related risk management practices in automobile driving is also discussed. The psychological aspects of risk tolerance as an inhibiting factor in the adoption of three-point restraint seat belts is explored. Personal safety risk management is compared to financial risk management.
