- Abstract: This article discusses the aspects of nomination, electoral and executive politics of U.S. presidents. The 1972 party platforms and acceptance speeches are presumed to be representative of nomination politics. The 1972 campaign speeches of major party candidates are taken as representative of electoral politics. The 1973 Inaugural Address and State of the Union Message are assumed to be representative of executive politics. The texts were analyzed through a combination of content analysis and factor analysis. The prime emphasis of nomination politics is on social benefits. This area accounts for 21% of the words analyzed in the Republican text and 20% of the corresponding Democratic text. In assessing the characteristics of the electoral season, one encounters group politics and national unity appeals, the rising emotion of the campaign, and the blending together of a number of themes. Once in office, an administration must address itself to the tasks of governance. The 1973 texts gave attention to policy areas, and dealt with policy questions in a less emotional way. Civil liberties, social benefits economic management, and natural resources, each of which was the subject of a separate inaugural and State of the Union Message, received 17%, 14%, 13%, and 12% of the total emphasis respectively.
