The article reports on otaku, people obsessed with anime and manga. The Akihabara section of Tokyo (Japan) is given over to establishments catering to otaku like the "maid cafes," in which women dressed as maids wait on male customers and call them "master." Cosplay enthusiasts dress up like anime characters like a goth Lolita and nineteenth-century sheperdesses. Otaku were once seen as nerds but are now becoming more socially acceptable. The international popularity of anime has helped its fans become more mainstream in Japan.
