The article explores the ethnic identities within Catholic parishes in Minnesota. The author reflects on historical scholarship that emphasizes ethnic divisions and voluntary segregation among urban Catholic parishes. Emphasis is given to the multiethnic status and cultural pluralism of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church (IHM) in Currie, Minnesota and the maintenance of parish unity despite conflicts regarding liturgical styles, linguistic differences, and devotional practices. The impact of community leaders such as Bishop John Ireland is highlighted with respect to fostering interethnic cooperation.
