    • Abstract:
The article presents an examination into the demographic and social history of New Spain in the 16th-century, outlining the mixed-race individuals of the nation and the application of the term "mulato." Details are given highlighting not only the prevalence of mixed African-European race but also figures of mixed African-indigenous ancestry. The inter-cultural social conditions of the period are then described in further depth, challenging the mainstream historiographical and demographic use of the term as a homogeneous social group.
