      An essay that examines how modernity is viewed by historians is presented. It addresses issues related to defining modernity as a distinct period of time in a distinct place and questions what occurs when two places experiencing this form of modernity meet. It examines issues related to the spread of Christianity in China, East-West relations and westernization.
