    • Abstract:
The article discusses almshouses in England and the Dutch Republic in the period between 1350 and 1800. The authors present the history of an almshouse in the village of Noordgouwe, near Zietikzee, the Netherlands, established by Dutch Maria de Pottere and Sir John Conyers. An attempt is made in defining an almshouse. A comparison is presented between Dutch and English almshouses in terms of architecture, origins and pace of foundation, outlining main similarities and differences. The authors also focus on reasons for the overall congruence between England and the Dutch Republic.
