The article presents information about the induction of green roofs at the Saint Simon Stock Catholic School, Bronx, New York City. Parish rector Nelson Belizario contacted Gaia Institute founder Paul Mankiewicz to make green roofs and by the effort of Mankiewicz, the school got an award totaling more than $130,000 from the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corp. Mankiewicz believes that weight and cost are two obstacles to build more green roofs. Gaia Soil, a growing medium that is 85 percent Styrofoam, was used in the school as a growing medium. A mixture of agricultural waste, clay slurry and compost made the remaining 15 per cent.
