The article reports on a roundup and transfer of about 2,500 horses in Nevada to holding pens in the Midwest and East on December 28, 2009 by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), despite protests and lawsuits. Such action is said to be a part a new strategy introduced by Department of Interior Secretary Ken Salazar in October. Tom Gorey, spokesman for BLM, explains that Salazar's strategy entails addressing the rise of horse population at their source. The Humane Society of the U.S. argues that the BLM should use other techniques like contraception.
