    • Abstract:
An essay is presented in which the author discusses the field of lynching scholarship as of the early 21st century. It examines the focus upon mob violence in the southern U.S. and the work of scholars such as Jacquelyn Dowd Hall, Robert L. Zangrando, and James R. McGovern. The author also discusses perceived weaknesses in contemporary lynching scholarship, particularly the need for study on the responses of African American communities to violence perpetrated by whites and lynching violence outside of the southern U.S., particularly in the U.S. west. The author also suggests the need for a database dedicated to U.S. lynching research.
