Violence and Caring in School and Society.

Writers conceive of the problem of violence differently. Some attribute the problem to environmental factors. Others see it as a biological defect. Still others view violence as a cognitive problem or as a matter of rational choice. A growing number of scholars, such as Nel Noddings and Jane Roland Martin, view the problem of violence and violence prevention through the lens of a caring approach. As with other feminist writers in education, Martin has broadened her focus beyond gender to include race and ethnicity, social class, and violence. For her the best prospect for dealing with violence is by reliance on values traditionally associated with the lives of women, the home, and values of care, concern, and connection. The focus of this article is to examine the viability of her treatment of the question of violence through a more caring approach in school and society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
