Spellings Panel Spurred Progress but Failed to Remake Higher Education.

The article evaluates the progress that has been made in regards to recommendations by the U.S. Commission on the Future of Higher Education in 2006 on ways to improve American higher education by stressing the principles of accessibility, affordability, and accountability. According to the article the Commission, under the direction of former Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, implemented policies such as aligning curriculum between high schools and colleges, providing need-based college student aid, and using standardized assessments to evaluate student learning in an effort to increase the performance of American college students in comparison to their international peers. Statistics related to mathematical ability, educational attainment, and student debt are also provided.
