      The article discusses the archival initiatives of public and academic libraries, archives and other cultural institutions aimed at preserving physical and digital records, oral histories, data and often critical metadata relating to civic unrest and natural disasters. Topics discussed include Narrating Hurricane Katrina Through Oral History launched in fall 2005, the Documenting Ferguson initiative in 2014 and the California Listens project of the California State University and StoryCenter.
