    • Abstract:
The article considers the effects of digital cinematography and special effects technology on the motion picture industry as of 2012. Topics include the decrease in the average weekly attendance at movie theaters as compared to the 1930s, the successful box office performance of the digital effects-heavy 2012 film "The Avengers," and the increasing tendency to merchandise films. The author criticizes films' lack of deeper meaning, which he believes stems from the U.S. film industry's fear that it will alienate audiences if a movie promotes any kind of message. Independent films are praised.
