The inhabitants of our continents met for the first time more than 500 years ago. Nowadays, they have formed a strategic association comprising a quarter of all global nation states, with around a billion inhabitants who promote shared interests and values. In 1999, the Bi-regional Strategic Association was established at the first Latin America, Caribbean and EU summit. It was a very ambitious project that aimed for a broader political dialogue between the EU and LAC and a wide Free Trade area between the two regions. It was to be achieved through association agreements with different sub-regional groups between the EU on one side and LAC on the other. Nuestros continentes se han encontrado por primera vez hace ya más de 500 años y hoy en día conforman una asociación estratégica compuesta por una cuarta parte de todos los Estados que constituyen el sistema Internacional, con unos mil millones de habitantes que promueven valores e intereses compartidos. En la Primera Cumbre UE-Amérlca Latina y Caribe, en el año 1999, se estableció la Asociación Estratégica Birregional. Fue un proyecto muy ambicioso que tenía como objetivo un diálogo político más estrecho entre la UE y ALC, una amplia zona de libre comercio entre las dos regiones. A través de Acuerdos de asociaciones con diferentes grupos subregionales entre la UE por un lado y ALC por el otro.
