    • Abstract:
Blending the new analytical tools offered by such databases as Manos (previously Manos Teatrales) and a philological examination of rhyme and meter, this article ponders the dramatic effect of the e-o assonances found in Pedro Calderón de la Barca's Eco y Narciso , considered in relation to other dramas by the baroque playwright. Analysis draws on quantitative information made possible by the recent advances in the application of digital humanities research techniques to the study of the Spanish comedia, including a new database of assonance in Calderón under preparation as well as the paradigm-setting Manos database. Additional insights emerge from a newly available manuscript of Eco y Narciso that had long been unavailable to scholars. Taken together, this blend of quantitative and textual analysis reveals how the sonorous qualities of assonances allow the playwright to delve into the emotional depths of human subjectivity.
