Rules-based system for quality assessment of references in scientific articles.

This study proposes assessing the quality and completeness of references included in scientific articles by applying a rule-based system supported by the use of regular expressions. Referencing resources used is sometimes seen as a secondary task or a simple requirement in the publication process, ignoring the impact and importance of proper writing, author’s credits, communications, bibliometric indicators, and collaborations. A rule-based system is created with the ability to extract citations from articles published by journals, which allows to evaluate references to scientific articles, books, and book chapters in APA and IEEE styles. It is concluded that the system contributes to improving the quality of the editorial process by allowing editors to check the current citation status of their journals while assisting in their decision-making process by ensuring proper citations. Este trabajo plantea la evaluación de calidad y completitud de las referencias incluidas en artículos científicos, utilizando un sistema basado en reglas y apoyado en el uso de expresiones regulares. Referenciar los recursos utilizados en un trabajo, en ocasiones es visto como una tarea secundaria o un simple requisito en el proceso de publicación; pasando por alto el impacto y la importancia que tiene su correcta redacción, en cuanto a crédito a autores, comunicación, indicadores bibliométricos y colaboración. Se crea un prototipo con la capacidad de extraer las citas de los trabajos publicados por la revista y evaluar las referencias a artículos científicos, libros y capítulos de libro en los estilos APA e IEEE. Se concluye que el sistema contribuye a mejorar la calidad del proceso editorial, al permitir que los editores conozcan el estado actual de citación de sus revistas, coadyuvando en la toma de decisiones para garantizar la adecuada referenciación de los trabajos.
