      The objective of the present work is to show how the XVI century New Spain theater was used by the missionaries who arrived at the New World, as an instrument for preaching the Gospel. In the development of this subject two controversial aspects are exposed: 1) if the medieval theater influenced the one of New Spain and, 2) if it was rooted in an European of origin or if it had a pre-Hispanic begining.       El objetivo del presente trabajo es mostrar cómo el teatro novohispano del siglo XVI fue utilizado por los misioneros que llegaron al Nuevo Mundo, como instrumento de evangelización. En el desarrollo de este tema se exponen dos aspectos polémicos: 1) si el teatro medieval influyó en el teatro novohispano y, 2) si es de origen eminentemente europeo o tuvo sus antecedentes prehispánicos.
