Mt. Pleasant Regional Library - "Chasing the Moon" is a new PBS documentary series about the space race to the moon. Attend this advance screening to preview a clip from the documentary before it premieres July 8. This exciting new series recasts the Space Age as a fascinating stew of scientific innovation, political calculation, media spectacle, visionary impulses and personal drama, utilizing a feast of previously overlooked and lost archival material.

The featured clip includes footage captured in mid-July 1969, as crowds flooded Cocoa Beach in anticipation of the historic Apollo 11 launch. At the same time, civil rights leader Robert Abernathy led a peaceful protest to criticize the priorities of the federal government. Then head of NASA Thomas Pain invited Abernathy to the launch site, and the protesters joined the thousands of Americans gathered to see the Saturn V launch Apollo 11 into the atmosphere.
