Hurd/St. Andrews Library - Let's get writing! Submit your writing for the Cynthia Graham Hurd/St. Andrews TeenSpot Annual Black History Essay Contest! This year's essay topic is: what are some of the most important cultural contributions of the Harlem renaissance? (ex: jazz, literature, etc.)  

This contest is open to all Charleston-area students in grades 6 through 12. One winner will be chosen from each level (middle school and high school) and will receive a trophy and a $50 Amazon Gift Card. Entries are due February 28, 2022. Winners will be notified on March 31, 2022. 

Contest Rules: 

  • One entry permitted per person 

  • Each essay must reflect the contestant's own research and original writing.  

  • Submissions will be judged on the student’s ability to address the topic in an articulate, clear, and organized manner. Library staff will judge the contest and evaluate submissions. The judges’ decisions are final.  

  • Essays should be no longer than 500 words. 

  • Submissions may be typed. 

  • To be considered eligible, submissions must include ALL of the following: The student's name, email address, telephone number, grade level, school name, and the title of the essay.  

  • Submit essays in person or via email or snail mail (postmarked by February 28).
