Edgar Allan Poe/Sullivan's Island Library - Meet Mary Pringle, a resident purple martin landlord and Disney Conservation Hero, to learn how to host a nesting colony of purple martins. In the eastern U.S., this insectivorous bird relies completely on human-made structures for nesting since many of their preferred natural habitats, like cavities in dead trees, aren’t available anymore. Jen McCarthey Tyrrell from Audubon S.C. will join Mary to talk about the natural history and ecology of this species, how they need your help, and how you can be a successful purple martin landlord and host your own colony! This workshop will include information about necessary equipment to purchase, placement, colony care and maintenance, as well as a question and answer session. This program is presented in partnership with the Southeastern Wildlife Expo. Please click here to reserve your spot.
