The Gibbes Museum of Art - Join a book-club style discussion inspired by "Charles Williams: SUN + LIGHT." In this exhibition, South Carolina artist Charles Williams recounts stories told to him by his grandmother about the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, and the belief she passed down that would guide his work: “Stay in the light, stay
positive.” Through narrative poems in "Brown Girl Dreaming," Jacqueline Woodson also shares her experience growing up in South Carolina and New York as an African American in the 1960s and 1970s, living with the remnants of Jim Crow, and her growing awareness of the Civil Rights movement. Touching and powerful, each poem is both accessible and emotionally charged, each line a glimpse into a child’s soul as she searches for her place in the world and finds her voice through writing stories. The discussion will focus on the book and works in the exhibition. Please read the book so you can participate in the discussion. Participation is free and includes a coupon for discounted museum admission.
