Main Library - Join us for a presentation by Dr. Walter Curry on October 8 at 10 a.m. on The Thompson Family: Untold Stories from The Past (1830-1960), which chronicles the rich history of this Aiken County family. This book provides thoughtful insight on how family stories of hard life in servitude as slaves and sharecroppers to achieving personal successes, personal/civic responsibility, sacrifice, ultimate freedom, overcoming adversity, and redemption gives us all a greater appreciation of how the past helps shape our narrative today. The discussion will focus on the life of Lavinia Thompson, who was born into slavery in 1844. Lavinia courageously survived physical abuse and family tragedy to go on to receive a pension for her service as a cook in the Confederate Army.

Dr. Curry is founder of Renaissance Publications, LLC.
