Full-time position for an energetic, team-oriented Cataloging & Metadata Librarian to support user discovery of library resources. The Cataloging & Metadata Librarian makes the Charleston County Public Library’s collections accessible through the description and intellectual organization of these collections, following current standards and best practices for cataloging and metadata.


Original cataloging (including a local history collection), complex copy cataloging, and authority control work using CCPL cataloging standards. Assisting library generalists with routine copy cataloging and reviewing their work. Working with the ILS Manager and the Digital Content Creator to improve the functionality of the discovery layer for a seamless experience for the end user. Serving on the cross-departmental Digital Library Initiative task force, a working group formed to audit and improve the following within the library system: technical functions, staff workflows, dissemination of information, and access to resources.

The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian must be comfortable working with staff and patrons with all levels of cataloging knowledge. Incumbent should be a good listener and communicator, present an upbeat, cheerful attitude, enjoy working cooperatively as a team member, and place top priority on customer service. The incumbent must able to balance quality cataloging with quick turnaround of materials with the goal of getting library materials to the patrons expediently. The incumbent should understand the bias in subject terms and classification and, as part of the cataloging team, will collaborate with the library community to build more equitable cataloging practices. The incumbent will also serve as a key resource in understanding and troubleshooting issues that impact all modules of the ILS. Must be flexible to assume additional responsibilities as needed to meet the changing needs of the department. Other duties as assigned.


ALA-accredited Master of Library Science degree. Prefer public library experience. Knowledge of current cataloging standards. Cataloging experience preferred. Familiarity with RDA, DDC, LCSH, and MARC. Knowledge of Dublin Core a plus. Must possess excellent customer service skills, ability to get along well with others and to communicate effectively with customers, both internal and external. Must use tact, courtesy and good judgment when communicating with library staff. Must be proficient in Microsoft Excel, with the ability to learn and use new methods, policies, and technical advances. Must have the stamina for periods of walking, standing, reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and sitting. Must be able to lift library materials including books and maneuver loaded book carts weighing approximately 50 to 100 pounds. Bilingual – English/Spanish a plus. 


Hiring Salary Range:  $38,833.60 – $43,763.20 annually depending on qualifications.
