Full time position. In our fast growing library system, this candidate serves as the Head of Children's for the Mt Pleasant Branch; must be able to communicate all information from the Children's Services Coordinator, work on designated system wide projects and attend monthly meetings with other children's department heads.

As head of Children's Services for the branch, must possess exceptional knowledge and competency of modern principles and practices in children's services and products, both print and electronic, for children from infancy to fifth grade. Provide reader's advisory and information services to customers of the Children's Department; knowledge of and experience with parent education initiatives, Every Child Ready to Read, Early childhood development, and early literacy skills are desirable. Ability to promote use of the library and its services to youth, their caregivers, educators, and advocacy groups through outreach events, school visits, and library tours. Must also be able to develop new as well as maintain ongoing children's programs, story times/storytelling, puppetry programs, and STEAM/STEM programs. Must be comfortable proactively seeking out customers to offer assistance in all areas of the library (desk, roving, e-mail, phone, or additional methods of communication).This person must be able to supervise a staff of Librarians and paraprofessionals and occasionally serve as the senior staff person in charge of the facility. Participate in collection development and maintenance, including recommending children's materials for acquisition and withdrawal in consultation with Library Collection and Technical Services staff.

Contribute content about the Children’s Department to the Communications and Programming Department for inclusion in the Library’s social media presence. Must have the ability to follow established procedures and to perform work requiring considerable detail; possess the ability to carry out assignments independently, show initiative in making constructive suggestions for improvements in services and collections, as well as ability to interact pleasantly and effectively with staff and the general public. Must have the ability to work well with people in groups and individual settings. Must be flexible to assume additional responsibilities as needed to maintain branch operations. Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS: ALA-accredited Master of Library Science degree with one (1) year post-MLS experience. Supervisory experience preferred but not required. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office suite, with the ability to learn and use new methods, policies and technical advances. Must use tact, courtesy and good judgement when communicating with co-workers and the public. Must be able to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends. Must have stamina for periods of walking, standing, reaching, and bending. Must be able to lift library materials including books, AV equipment, program materials and maneuver loaded book carts weighing approximately 50 to 100 pounds. Bilingual - English/Spanish a plus.

Eligible for or hold South Carolina State Library certification.

Hiring Salary Range: $43,513.60 - $49,004.80 annually depending on qualifications.
