Part-time entry-level position – twenty (20) hours per week.  Assists Children’s Department staff with programs including story time and summer reading.  Duties may include conducting story times for children birth through age five (5), preparing and conducting crafts, and performing puppet shows. Maintains appearance of Children’s Department, including organizing materials, straightening furniture, and cleaning toys.  Shelves library materials.  Performs library clerical functions; assists children and caregivers in use of library resource, provides reference and reader’s advisory services.  Serves at other departments’ service desks as needed.  Desirable qualifications include experience in children’s programming and outreach and knowledge of child development, early literacy skills, and children’s literature.  Must be computer literate and knowledgeable in various computer software and applications, including Microsoft Office, e‐mail, searching the Internet and research databases.  Must be comfortable proactively seeking out customers to offer assistance in all areas of the library (desk, roving, e-mail, phone, or additional methods of communication). Candidates should be good listeners and communicators, present an up‐beat, cheerful attitude, enjoy working cooperatively as a team member, and place top priority on customer service.  Must be flexible to assume additional responsibilities as needed to maintain branch/departmental operations.  Other duties as assigned. 

REQUIREMENTS: High School graduate or GED equivalent with excellent customer service skills, ability to get along well with others and to communicate effectively with the public and with library staff, a strong work ethic. Must use tact, courtesy and good judgement when communicating with co-workers and the public. Ability to work with children of varied backgrounds and ages.  Must be proficient in Microsoft Office suite, with the ability to learn and use new methods, policies and technical advances.  Must be able to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.  Must have the stamina for periods of walking, standing, reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling and sitting.  Ability to shelve library materials as needed.  Must be able to lift library materials including books, AV equipment, program materials and maneuver loaded book carts weighing approximately 50 to 100 pounds.  Prior library experience helpful but not necessary. Bilingual – English/Spanish a plus. A valid South Carolina driver’s license with a safe driving record. 

Salary: $10.60 - $11.94 per hour depending on qualifications – twenty (20) hours per week
