Part-time entry-level position – twenty (20) hours per week. Assists Children’s Department staff with programs including story time and summer reading. Maintains appearance of Children’s Department, including organizing materials, straightening furniture and cleaning toys. Shelves library materials as needed. Other duties may include planning and presentation of afternoon programming for children ages 5-11 such as art projects, simple science experiments, crafts and technology exploration. Performs library clerical functions, assists children and caregivers in use of library resources, provides reference and reader’s advisory services. Desirable qualifications include experience in children’s programming and outreach and knowledge of child development, early literacy skills and children’s literature. Must be comfortable proactively seeking out patrons to offer assistance in all areas of the library (desk, roving, e-mail, phone or additional methods of communication). Candidates should be good listeners and communicators, present an up‐beat, cheerful attitude, enjoy working cooperatively as a team member and place top priority on customer service. Must be flexible to assume additional responsibilities and scheduling requirements as needed to meet the coverage needs of the public service desks in other departments. Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS: High School graduate or GED equivalent with excellent customer service skills, the ability to get along well with others, communicate effectively with the public and with library staff, and maintain a strong work ethic. Must use tact, courtesy and good judgement when communicating with co-workers and the public. Ability to work with children of varied backgrounds and ages. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office suite, with the ability to learn and use new methods, policies and technical advances. Must be able to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends. Must have the stamina for periods of walking, standing, reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling and sitting. Ability to shelve library materials as needed. Must be able to lift library materials including books, AV equipment, program materials and maneuver loaded book carts weighing approximately fifty (50) to one hundred (100) pounds. Prior library experience helpful but not necessary. Bilingual – English/Spanish a plus.

Hiring Salary Range: $10.60 - $11.94 per hour depending on qualifications – twenty (20) hours per week.
