CHARLESTON, S.C. - Spend your July in orbit with Charleston County Public Library! As we get ready for the 50th anniversary celebration of the Apollo 11 moon landing, we've lined up a ton of great events for kids, teens, and families. Whether you want to enjoy space-themed movies, get a look at what it's like to train for space flight, or make cosmic crafts, there's something for everyone. 

We'll even have retired NASA astronaut Dr. Don Thomas join us for two days of fun programs! During his career as a mission specialist astronaut for NASA, Thomas flew on four different space shuttle missions and spent 44 days in space. Learn how he became an astronaut, and hear what it was like living and working in space. These programs are made possible through a partnership with the Library Foundation of the Lowcountry.

Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Watch the historic event, learn from interactive exhibits, and enjoy some throwback snacks and music.

Apollo 11: Where Were You?

Join Solar System Ambassador Kellyanne Burbage to  share memories of the moon landing, listen to audio and video clips from NASA (including a real-time audio recording of the landing between Houston and the  Eagle),  and test your  Apollo knowledge with a Kahoot trivia game (participants are encouraged to bring their  cell phones to the event in order to participate in the trivia game).

Mobile Planetarium at Wanda Mount Pleasant Library

Climb inside this mobile planetarium to view planets and constellations in the night sky. There are three sessions: 10:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., and adults must accompany children.

"Chasing the Moon" is a new PBS documentary series about the space race to the moon. Attend this advance screening to preview a clip from the documentary before it premieres July 8. This exciting new series recasts the Space Age as a fascinating stew of scientific innovation, political calculation, media spectacle, visionary impulses and personal drama, utilizing a feast of previously overlooked and lost archival material.

The featured clip includes footage captured in mid-July 1969, as crowds flooded Cocoa Beach in anticipation of the historic Apollo 11 launch. At the same time, civil rights leader Robert Abernathy led a peaceful protest to criticize the priorities of the federal government. Then head of NASA Thomas Pain invited Abernathy to the launch site, and the protesters joined the thousands of Americans gathered to see the Saturn V launch Apollo 11 into the atmosphere.
