THE RISKY PATH OF TECHNOLOGICAL EVOLUTION. (English)

During the history of mankind, technology has accompanied human beings towards progress, modelling social structures and shaping thought. Up until now, the human species has stood at the top of the pyramid using technology as a tool to achieve its goals whilst using technology to predict future trends, and subsequently act to its advantage. However, at this juncture exists a new approach to technological progress that leads to what experts call Technological Singularity. From this moment, the ability to predict the future becomes unfeasible and the danger of losing control is anticipated. Technology is not only changing the way we communicate and interact, further prompting what we think and influencing us in both our decisions and actions. But, further still it is displacing us and compelling us to evolve into a new species. The new industrial revolution in which we are immersed entails, for the first time in the history of mankind, an unprecedented grandiose transformation across all divisions both personal and professional. There are many prominent scientists who are warning that artificial intelligence could indeed threaten humanity, it is a science fiction scenario that opens the shared debate about technology and the future of human beings. There is much division between anthropologists, futurologists, scientists and technologists on the impact on society by technologies new advances. Stephen Hawking himself considered, shortly before his death, "Although the primitive forms of artificial intelligence developed so far have already proved very useful, but the consequences of their development could mean the end of the human race". Is it new technologies that we should fear, or should we work to ensure that their use is compatible with human values? Is technology a means of transformation and what will these transformations entail for our society, will it end society, as we know it today?. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Durante la historia de la humanidad, la tecnología ha acompañado al ser humano en su camino hacia el progreso, modelando las estructuras sociales y las corrientes de pensamiento. Hasta el día de hoy, la especie humana se ha mantenido en la cúspide de la pirámide y ha utilizado la tecnología como herramienta para la consecución de sus metas, siendo capaces de predecir el futuro inmediato y actuar en consecuencia para guiarlo en su provecho. Sin embargo, el momento actual plantea un nuevo enfoque del avance tecnológico que parece desembocar en lo que los expertos denominan la Singularidad Tecnológica. A partir de ese momento, la predicción futura se hace inviable y se vislumbra el peligro de perder el control. La tecnología no sólo está cambiando la manera en que nos comunicamos y relacionamos, influenciando aquello qué pensamos y opinamos, dirigiéndonos en nuestras decisiones y acciones., sino que nos está desplazando y obligando a evolucionar hacia una nueva especie. La nueva revolución industrial en la que estamos inmersos conlleva, por vez primera en la historia de la humanidad, una transformación sin precedentes en todas las escalas, personales y profesionales. Son múltiples las personalidades científicas las que están alertando de que la inteligencia artificial podría amenazar a la humanidad, un escenario de ciencia ficción que vuelve abrir el debate sobre la tecnología y el futuro del ser humano. Antropólogos, futurólogos, científicos y tecnólogos se muestran divididos sobre el impacto en la sociedad de los nuevos avances. El propio Stephen Hawking consideraba, poco antes de fallecer que "aunque las formas primitivas de la inteligencia artificial que ya tenemos han demostrado ser muy útiles, el completo desarrollo de la misma podría significar el fin de la raza humana". Pero ¿debemos realmente temer a las nuevas tecnologías o deberíamos trabajar para asegurar que su uso sea compatible con los valores humanos? ¿Es la tecnología un medio o se transformará en un fin que pueda significar el final de nuestra sociedad, tal y como la conocemos hoy?.
