    • Abstract:
This article profiles U.S. author and journalist Robert Michael Lipsyte. He was born on January 16, 1938 in New York City. He is a seminal figure in the evolution of young adult literature. The Contender (1967), his first novel, was a landmark title that, along with S. E. Hinton's The Outsiders, helped create a new, socially relevant literature of realism for teenage readers. He was one of two internationally syndicated sports columnists for the New York Times and was the coauthor of Nigger, the 1964 autobiography of comedian and political activist Dick Gregory.
