    • Abstract:
A primarily political interpretation of criminal punishments, like that of Michel Foucault, will miss the religious substratum that helped define the law and shaped the rituals of public executions. This article describes the effects of this religious influence. The author suggests that other, apparently secular, activities could be re-examined to appreciate their full cultural meaning, which, in the case of new France, must comprise the beliefs and practices of Roman Catholicism.
