    • Abstract:
This article discusses the relationship between the environment and armed conflicts. According to the author, the environment is not only damaged by wars, but it is often the competition for natural resource which is an aggravating factor in many conflicts. He cites the Brundtland report “Our Common Future,” as an example of a vision of global security based on common environmental concerns. He argues that it is time to reconsider the Russian proposal for environmental security forces tabled at the U.N. Environment and Development Conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil which was rejected because of the cold-war mentality and sovereignty issues.
