- Abstract: A literary critique of the autobiography "A Son of the Forest" by Pequot minister William Apess, first published in 1829, is presented. It particularly examines Connecticut's Mashantucket Indian reservation in this work. The author comments on Pequot territoriality and land loss, concepts of sovereignty, and state Indian policy. Themes explored include Methodism, family, and the forest.
