The article examines author J. R. R. Tolkien's treatment of economic infrastructure in Middle-earth using tobacco, or pipe-weed, as an example of a Lukácsian commodity fetishism. Topics discussed are the importance of economic world-building in metapoeic fantasy and modern world, the obscurity of the working relationships among people by the predominance of exchange vale, and its recasting as relationship between consumers and commodities.
