      The final special presentation at Washington's Kennedy center was what will doubtless eventually become the New York City Opera production of "Ariodante." The basic element of "Ariodante" is sound, with an exceptional degree of lightness and grace, and much felicitous scoring. Nothing distracted as much from pleasure as did the orchestra, which was under-rehearsed, both on its own terms and in relation to the stage. The basic tempos were sound, however, and one may doubtless count on improvement.
