- Abstract: This article offers information on the creation of the drug BiDil which is approved to prevent congestive heart disease in African-American patients only. The medication is restricted in use not out of effectiveness but as a result of expiring patents and commerce. The author deplores the use of race to obtain commercial advantage and he feels the patent award and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval process have allowed the government to use race as a genetic category.
