Using Image Schemata to Teach Spatial Meanings of English Prepositions: Experimental Results and Vietnamese EFL Students' Opinions from a Pilot Study. (English)
    • Abstract:
This quasi-experimental study aims to apply basic concepts in cognitive linguistics to teaching spatial meanings of English prepositions to Vietnamese students. Different from previous research, this study extended the application to teaching the ten prepositions above, among, at, behind, beside, between, in, in front of, on, and under, and investigated the students' opinions. The teacher used 3D image schemata, integrated picturelanguage models, and productive tasks after instruction to investigate the effects of the pedagogical methods. Extraneous variables were also explored to measure the research validity and reliability. The results revealed that the experimental group outperformed the group who were taught in the traditional method. The students also expressed positive opinions about the methodology based on cognitive linguistics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
