    • Abstract:
A study conducted by the Institute of Biomedical Research in Barcelona, Spain, has found that a deficiency in the phagocytosis of apoptotic cells may contribute to the development of chronic inflammation and autoimmune symptoms in systemic lupus. The researchers discovered that modifications in the phenotype of monocytes and macrophages, specifically a decrease in the expression of CPT1a, reduced their ability to phagocytose and aggravated kidney damage in lupus nephritis. The study suggests that restoring CPT1a expression in tissue macrophages could potentially lead to the development of a new cell therapy to reduce kidney nephritis in lupus.
