    • Abstract:
Consumer spending on mobile services experienced a significant increase in the October-December quarter of 2023, driven by the cricket World Cup. This surge in spending was attributed to increased smartphone sales during the festive season, customer upgrades from 2G to 4G/5G services, and higher data usage levels. The latest data from Trai revealed that spending on mobile services rose 2.5% sequentially to around Rs 54,750 crore, with spending on data increasing by 3.4% to Rs 47,560.3 crore. This growth in consumer spending on mobile broadband services also resulted in market share gains for Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio. Additionally, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) called for a revenue share between telecom operators and large traffic generator apps to support infrastructure upgrades necessary to meet the growing demand for bandwidth.
