A literary criticism of the book "Northanger Abbey," by Jane Austen is presented. The author examines the novel in light of aspects of Gothic fiction in the late 18th century, focusing on the significance of the washing bills found by the book's character and their role in symbolizing the effect of courtship novels on readers. The themes of men's clothing and materiality are also addressed.
