    • Abstract:
Something Happens Music fans of a younger persuasion will know Tom Dunne only in his "radio DJ" guise, but a more mature generation will recognise that the Dubliner's talents stretch beyond twiddling knobs at Newstalk. Dunne's band Something Happens now falls into the category of "Irish rock stalwarts", but back in the 1980s the paisleyshirt-wearing, lusciouslocked frontman and bandmates Ray Harman, Eamonn Ryan and Alan Byrne were touted as the Irish act most likely to follow in U2's footsteps. Alas, something didn't happen — despite great songs such as Parachute and Petrol— and they were eventually dropped by Virgin Records. The quartet never officially split, but now come out only for special occasions. Their Electric Picnic set earlier this year proved their continued worth as a nostalgia trip, if nothing else. They're supported by Dublin alt-rockers the Journals. Lauren Murphy Whelan's, Dublin, Sat 29 8pm, €22, 1890 200 078 [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
