These materials, gathered through an intensive review of computer searches in sociopsychological and criminal justice databases, library holdings at Ohio State University, publications from the National Criminal Justice Reference Service, and telephone/mail contacts with state and country probation systems, examine issues in probation management including techniques, administration, and program efficiency and effectiveness. Several major issues are identified including: (1) the role of probation officers; (2) placement of probation services; (3) casework and brokerage strategies for assessing client needs and linking available community resources; and (4) the use of volunteers and paraprofessionals. Other topics of concern addressed by this review reveal that probation officers spend a great deal of time with paperwork and that probation is cheaper that institutionalization. (Author/HLM)
