      An essay is presented which discusses Europe's trade with the U.S. during the mid 19th century, including the role that international trade played in British, French and German neutrality during the American Civil War. Europe's importing of cotton from the U.S. Southern States, including Bremen, Germany's importing of cotton, is discussed.
