    • Abstract:
The article discusses various books related to several issues. One of the book discussed is "Annie John," by Jamaica Kincaid. Annie John, the young narrator and heroine of these connected stories, is smart, strong-willed, competitive, used to being praised by her parents and teachers and petted by her peers. She is the domineering princess of a very small world, Antigua. Her tale of growing up there includes the customary trials of school, friendships and budding adolescence, but seems more unusual for its exotic setting. Another book discussed is "Home Truths: Sixteen Stories," by Mavis Gallant. The sixteen stories of Gallant's new collection focus on footloose Canadians who try to reconnect themselves to a family or culture and to puzzle out the ground rule of their situations, which are often senseless, joyless and contradictory.
