      The article looks at international relations in the context of the war in Syria, focusing on the decision of Russian President Vladimir Putin to begin a military intervention on the side of the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. It suggests the U.S.'s failure to intervene earlier opened the way for Russia to become involved and discusses the prospects for Assad's regime and for the Islamic State (IS) militant group.
