    • Abstract:
The article discusses research by ecologist Sharon Hood published in the periodical "Ecological Applications" on the role of forest thinning and controlled burns in forest fire prevention as well as their influences on populations of mountain pine beetles. The relationship between beetle infestations, forest fires, and forest density is detailed along with the role of pine trees' secretions of resin in thwarting beetle attacks.
